Hoi An to Nha Trang is one of those journeys that looks simple on a map and turns into a half-day logistics puzzle once you actually try to plan it.
I’ve done this route three times in different ways. Here’s what each option actually looks like.

Option 1: Sleeper Bus — Best Value for Most Travelers
This is the default choice for independent travelers on the Hoi An–Nha Trang route, and for good reason.
The major operators — Futa Bus and Phương Trang — run direct overnight services from Hoi An (or with pickup via Da Nang) to Nha Trang. The bus leaves in the late afternoon or evening, you sleep through the coastal highway, and wake up at the Nha Trang bus terminal around dawn.
Cost: 200,000–350,000 VND (~$8–$14)
Duration: 10–12 hours
Departure: Most buses leave between 7pm–10pm from Hoi An or Da Nang
The sleeper berths are reclining pods, not flat beds — think 160-degree recline, not horizontal. Fine for a night. Bring a light layer; the AC runs cold.
Futa Bus has an office in Hoi An at 15.8794° N, 108.3349° E — book in person the day before or use their app. They’ll often have a shuttle that collects from your guesthouse in Hoi An and takes you to the main Da Nang terminal to join the long-distance bus.
ℹKnow Before You Go
“Open bus” tickets sold by guesthouses in Hoi An often add a markup of 30,000–50,000 VND over booking directly with Futa or Phương Trang. Not a huge amount, but worth knowing. Book direct if you have time.
Option 2: Flight — Best If You Value Time
No airport in Hoi An means you’re flying from Da Nang (DAD) to Cam Ranh / Nha Trang (CXR).
The flight itself is 45 minutes. But factor in: taxi or Grab from Hoi An to Da Nang airport (30–45 min, 150,000–250,000 VND/~$6–$10), arriving 90 minutes before departure, the 45-minute flight, baggage claim, and then a 30–45 minute transfer from Cam Ranh Airport to Nha Trang city.
Total door-to-door: 4–5 hours.
Cost: 400,000–1,200,000 VND (~$16–$48) depending on how far in advance you book
Duration: 4–5 hours total
Airlines: VietJet, Bamboo Airways, Vietnam Airlines
VietJet regularly has flash sales for this route — 400,000–600,000 VND (~$16–$24) is achievable if you book 2–3 weeks ahead. At that price, flying makes obvious sense over a 10-hour overnight bus. Above 900,000 VND (~$36) one-way, the bus becomes harder to dismiss.
→Who It’s For
Flying makes sense if: you have less than 3 weeks in Vietnam and every day counts; you’re over the overnight bus experience; or you find a sale fare under 600,000 VND. Skip it if you’re on a tight budget or enjoy watching Vietnam’s coastline from a bus window at dawn.

Option 3: Train — Technically Possible, Not Recommended
The train from Da Nang to Nha Trang runs on the Reunification Express line. But here’s the catch: Hoi An has no train station, so you’re taking a taxi or Grab to Da Nang station first (~30 min, 120,000–180,000 VND).
The Da Nang–Nha Trang train journey takes 8–11 hours depending on the service. Add the Hoi An→Da Nang transfer and you’re looking at 10–12 hours total — the same as the sleeper bus, but more complicated and usually more expensive.
Cost: 300,000–550,000 VND (~$12–$22) for soft seat; 400,000–700,000 VND (~$16–$28) for soft sleeper
Duration: 10–12 hours total (including Da Nang transfer)
The train does pass along a genuinely dramatic stretch of Vietnamese coastline between Da Nang and Quảng Ngãi — sea on one side, mountains on the other. If you’re a train enthusiast or have a daytime service, it’s a genuinely beautiful ride. But for most people doing Hoi An → Nha Trang as a point-to-point transfer, the bus wins on simplicity.
↗Insider Tip
If you want the coastal train scenery without the full Nha Trang journey, the Da Nang → Đà Nẵng → Diêu Trì section (2 hours south) is the most scenic stretch. Get off at Quảng Ngãi for the views, then catch an onward bus. Most travelers skip this entirely — which is exactly why it’s worth knowing.
Option 4: Private Transfer or Motorbike
Private car transfers from Hoi An to Nha Trang run around 2,500,000–4,000,000 VND (~$100–$160) for the full car. Makes sense for groups of 3–4 splitting the cost, especially if you want to stop along the way — Mỹ Sơn sanctuary, Quảng Ngãi province, or the coastal road through Bình Định.
Motorbiking it is possible — Highway 1 runs the full length, and there are scenic backroads. Budget 2–3 days if you’re doing it right, not as a rushed transfer. The distance is roughly 530km.
Arriving in Nha Trang: What to Expect
If you took the sleeper bus, you’ll arrive at the Phương Trang bus terminal on Lê Hồng Phong street (12.2554° N, 109.1736° E), roughly 3km from the beach. Open Grab — don’t take offers from drivers waiting outside. A Grab to most guesthouses runs 30,000–50,000 VND (~$1.50–$2).
If you flew into Cam Ranh Airport (CXR), you’re 30km south of the city. Options:
- Airport shuttle bus: 70,000–90,000 VND (~$3), runs to the city center, drops near major hotels
- Grab: 250,000–350,000 VND (~$10–$14) direct to your accommodation
- Taxi: Only if metered — expect 300,000–400,000 VND (~$12–$16); agree on meter before getting in
If you came by train, Nha Trang train station (12.2387° N, 109.1944° E) is almost central — a 5-minute Grab to most accommodation.

Hoi An to Nha Trang FAQ
Is there a direct bus from Hoi An to Nha Trang?
Yes — Futa Bus and Phương Trang both run services that pick up in Hoi An (or collect you via a shuttle to their Da Nang terminal) and go direct to Nha Trang. You don’t need to arrange a Da Nang connection yourself. Book directly with the operator or at your guesthouse.
What time does the bus from Hoi An to Nha Trang depart?
Most evening departures leave between 7pm and 10pm from Hoi An or Da Nang. There are also some daytime services (8am–11am) if you want to travel during daylight and see the coast, but overnight is the most popular option since it saves a night’s accommodation.
How do I get from Hoi An to Da Nang for the flight?
Grab is the easiest option — 30 to 45 minutes depending on traffic, typically 120,000–200,000 VND (~$5–$8). Some guesthouses in Hoi An can arrange a shared shuttle to the airport for around 100,000–150,000 VND per person if you’re traveling with others.
Should I stop anywhere between Hoi An and Nha Trang?
If you have time, yes. Quy Nhơn (Bình Định province) sits roughly halfway and is one of the most underrated beach towns in Vietnam — quieter than Nha Trang, better seafood per dollar, almost no foreign tourists. A night there before continuing south turns a transit into an actual trip. Vietnam Itinerary 2 Weeks covers this stopover in the 14-day routing.
The Bottom Line
For most independent travelers, the overnight sleeper bus wins. You leave Hoi An in the evening, sleep through the journey, and wake up in Nha Trang with a full day ahead of you — and 200,000–350,000 VND (~$8–$14) spent instead of $40+.
If you have a week or less in Vietnam and every hour counts, fly. VietJet sale fares make the math easy.
Once you’re there, the Nha Trang Travel Guide has everything you need for the city itself — which islands are worth the boat ride, where to eat seafood at local prices, and why the Po Nagar Cham Towers are the most overlooked thing in the entire city.
